Indien protestiert gegen die Entscheidung eines dänischen Gerichts, den mutmaßlichen Waffenschmuggler Niels Holck nicht auszuliefern.

Indien hat seine Beziehungen zu Dänemark eingefroren. Das teilte Außenministerin Lene Espersen am Dienstag unter Berufung auf den dänischen Botschafter in Neu Delhi mit. Grund ist die Entscheidung eines dänischen Gerichts, den mutmaßlichen Waffenschmuggler Niels Holck nicht auszuliefern.

Bis auf weiteres müssen nun alle Kontakte zwischen den Ländern über das indische Außenministerium abgewickelt werden. Das bedeute de facto einen Boykott, sagte Espersen. Sie bezeichnete die indische Entscheidung als “klar negative Entwicklung”, insbesondere als Indien ein “extrem wichtiger Partner” sei.

Die Ministerin deutete an, ein gewisses Verständnis für die Verärgerung Indiens zu haben, wollte zu der Gerichtsentscheidung über den Schmuggler Holck jedoch nicht Stellung nehmen. Im Jahr 2002 hatte Esperse als Justizministerin die Auslieferung Holcks noch ausgeschlossen.

Die dänische Justiz hatte die geforderte Auslieferung des Dänen mit der Begründung abgelehnt, dieser riskiere in einem indischen Gefängnis gefoltert zu werden. Holck schleuste im Jahr 1995 größere Mengen – es soll sich um mehrere Tonnen gehandelt haben – Waffen an Aufständische im indischen Teilstaat West-Bengalen. Teilweise gab Holck diese Aktion zu. Im Jahr 2010 wurde Holck wegen des Besitzes von gefälschten Pässen in Dänemark festgenommen.

Next meeting of GIRT Hamburg on 5th Sept. 2011

Hamburg is further extending its relations with India. The Hanseatic city will be celebrating the “India Week Hamburg” from 16 to 23 October of this year. German-Indian Round Table (GIRT) Hamburg invites its “participants” and other interested persons to its next meeting on September 5th, 2011 to provide detailed information about a week that is set to celebrate India and Indo-Hamburg relations.
We are pleased that Ms. Henriette Hintelmann (International Co-operation Division, Senate Chancellery of Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg) and Mr. Johannes Freudewald (Spokesperson of the India Week Hamburg 2011) will elaborate on the activities planned for a fascinating and rich programme for the India Week covering various aspects such as the culture, social & political issues and economy.
We will of course also dedicate some time to other current issues related to Indo-German relations. The event will also provide the participants an opportunity to share thoughts and do “networking”.
The event will take place on Monday, 5th Sept. 2011, at 18:30h in Hotel Baseler Hof (Esplanade 11, 20354 Hamburg). As usual, the meeting takes place in the form of a “Stammtisch”, whereby each participant is expected to consume his or her evening meal at the meeting and pay for own consumption of food and beverages. This is a part of the arrangement with the event venue that allows us not to charge a participation fee.
Participation in this event is possible by invitation. Those interested in receiving an invitation may write to tiwari@tuhh.de by August 31, 2011. Since seating capacity is limited we require binding registration and will send the confirmed participants a written affirmation of the registration prior to the event.

German-Indian Round Table Meeting in Hamburg

German-Indian Round Table (GIRT) Hamburg lädt herzlich zum nächsten Treffen des German-Indian Round Table am 5. September ein. Diesmal haben wir die Freude, Frau Henriette Hintelmann (Senatskanzlei der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg, Abteilung Internationale Zusammenarbeit) und Herrn Johannes Freudewald (Pressesprecher der India Week Hamburg 2011) als Referenten begrüßen zu dürfen. Unsere beiden Referenten sind maßgeblich an der Vorbereitung der India Week beteiligt, die vom 16. bis 23. Oktober zum 4. Mal in Hamburg stattfindet und die vom GIRT mit initiiert wurde.

Frau Hintelmann und Herr Freudewald werden uns über den Stand der Planung, das sehr ansehnliche und vielfältige Veranstaltungsprogramm sowie über die geplanten Öffentlichkeitsmaßnahmen informieren. Wir werden diese Gelegenheit auch nutzen, um Ihnen von den geplanten GIRT-Veranstaltungen zu berichten und Ihr Feedback für die Feinplanung mitzunehmen. Wir werden natürlich auch genug Zeit haben, uns über weitere aktuelle Themen aus dem deutsch-indischen Umfeld auszutauschen und zu „netzwerken“.

Die Veranstaltung findet, wie gewohnt, ab 18:30 im Hotel Baseler Hof (Esplanade 11, 20354 Hamburg) statt. Es handelt sich um einen “Stammtisch”, die Gäste tragen die Kosten für eigene Spesen und Getränke. Aus Kapazitätsgründen wird um eine verbindliche Anmeldung via E-Mail an tiwari@tuhh.de bis zum 31. TIME magazine: “India’s Leading Export: CEOs”

“India may be the ideal CEO training ground”, says a recent article in TIME magazine. Carla Power, the author of the said article, writes:

“The Banga brothers [Ajay Banga, CEO of MasterCard and Vindi Banga, a partner at Clayton Dubilier & Rice]  are two of a growing roster of global Indian business leaders, a roster that includes CEOs such as Citigroup’s Vikram Pandit and PepsiCo’s Indra Nooyi as well as the deans of both Harvard Business School and INSEAD.” Citing a study by two professors from Wharton and China Europe International Business School she mentions:

“The data suggest Indians are scaling corporate heights. In a study of S&P 500 companies, Egon Zehnder found more Indian CEOs than any other nationality except American. Indians lead seven companies; Canadians, four. Among the C-suite executives in the 2009 FORTUNE 500 were two mainland Chinese, two North American Chinese and 13 Indians […].”

Elaborating further she writes:

“What factors account for the rise and rise of India-trained business minds? “Our colleagues in our Asian offices are asking the same question,” laughs Jill Ader, head of CEO succession at the executive-search firm Egon Zehnder International. “Their clients in China and Southeast Asia are saying, ‘How come it’s the Indians getting all the top jobs?'” It could be because today’s generation of Indian managers grew up in a country that provided them with the experience so critical for today’s global boss. Multiculturalism? Check. Complex competitive environment? Check. Resource-constrained developing economy? You got that right. And they grew up speaking English, the global business language.”
